Yangon, the capital city is the main gateway to Myanmar. Evergreen and cool with lush tropical trees, shady parks and beautiful lakes, Yangon has earned the name of the Garden City of the East. Yangon was founded by King Alaungpaya on the site of a small village called Dagon when he conquered Lower Myanmar in 1755. The name Yangon means "End of Strife" which was anglicized to Rangoon. The present day Yangon covers over 350 sq.km. and has a population of over 5 million.

How to get there

Myanmar is well-connected to all parts of the world. Foreign tourists usually come by air, but sometimes they might visit in masse a cruise ship by prior arrangement. Daily flight from Bangkok and Singapore. The domestic airlines: Myanmar Airways, Yangon Airways and Air Mandalay have regular flight to Mandalay, Bagan, Inle and other tourist destinations.

Why so special

Yangon enjoys generally good weather. Myanmar being a leading Theravada Buddhist country, Yangon abounds with famous pagodas and edifices like Sule’, Botahtaung, Kaba Aye, Chaukhutkyi, Mahawijaya, Mai-lamu Pagoda and Maha-Pasana Great Cave (venue of the Sixth Buddhist Synod). Foreigners can also experience the Buddhist religious life, even if for a short time, at several Vipassana meditation centres. Then there are standard big-city attractions like National Museum, Bogyoke Aung San Park, Zoological Garden, Hlawga Wildlife Park and at Htaukkyant the calm well-tended Allied War Memorial Cemetery with thousands of stone-graves.
